THE ARTIST MEETS THE WRITER
Fragments from the Collection of
the National Literary Museum
21 December 2017–11 February 2018
Opening on Thursday, 21 December, at 6 p. m.
The Palace, Knyaz Alexander I Sq.
The exhibition was prepared for the occasion of the forthcoming Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Interesting portraits, landscapes and illustrations unknown to the public, by 49 artists, as well as pictorial and graphic works by writers captivated by the art of painting, are on display. The works are proof of the personal and artistic acquaintances of great names of the Bulgarian intellectual elite from the post-Liberation epoch to the end of the 20th century, and undoubtedly attest to their talented presence on the European creative scene.
The meetings between writers and artists, their joint work in the sphere of book publishing, the official and personal gifts, their friendly gestures; all are significant elements of their creative everyday life, but also of Bulgarian cultural life. They can be traced in paintings and drawings given as presents to writers by Ivan Mrkvička, Stoyan Sotirov, and Konstantin Shtarkelov, among others; in portraits of writers by Petar Morozov, Alexander Bozhinov, Boris Georgiev, Mihail Krastev, Zlatyu Boyadzhiev, Vasil Stoilov, caricatures by Alexander Dobrinov, illustrations by Dechko Uzunov, Rumen Skorchev, Iliya Petrov, Simeon Venov, Haralampi Tachev, Vasil Zahariev, Vadim Lazarkevich, and others. The exhibition includes little-known drawings by Konstantin Velichkov, Chudomir, Nikolay Raynov, Sirak Skitnik, Zmey Goryanin, Boris Shivachev, Dimitar Dimov, and Andrey Germanov, in whom the two talents —of a writer and an artist—intertwine.
This exhibition was made possible with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Bulgaria.
