Opening on Thursday, 27 July, at 18:00

The exhibition principally includes works from the collections of the Vladimir Dimitrov–The Master Art Gallery in Kyustendil, as well as the National Gallery, Sofia City Art Gallery, the Vazrazhdane Gallery in Plovdiv, and friends of the artist.
Stefan Despodov is among the most talented representatives of his generation of artists. He was born in Kyustendil. In 1974, he graduated in Applied Graphics from the National Academy of Arts, in the class of Prof. Alexander Poplilov. His appearances in the spheres of poster art, satirical drawing, and illustration date as far back as his student years. He began his artistic career as an art editor at Tehnika [Technics] Publishing House and later with the ‘Narodna kultura’ [People’s Culture] newspaper. From 1989, he worked for ‘Glas’ [Voice], the independent magazine for literature and journalism; the ‘Most’ [Bridge] almanac; and the ‘Literaturen vestnik’ [Literary newspaper], among others. He was the art director of three animated films. He participated in more than 200 exhibitions in Bulgaria and abroad, was awarded more than 80 international and national prizes, and published five catalogues of his works.
It was his fine sense of humour and unique appreciation of the absurd that, for many years, connected Stefan Despodov with the Ivan Vazov National Theatre and the Aleko Konstantinov Satirical Theatre.
